  • Collect and compare information

Before you can start, you first need to choose the right path. You can find inspirations and tips on the Mayrhofen website under the heading Hiking in the Nature Park,
We especially recommend the interactive map, it offers the best overview of the mountaineering tours in the Zillertal. In addition, it facilitates preselection with the filter option, according to level of difficulty, hiking theme or distance.

Once you have found an interesting route, it's all about the detailed informationwhich the following questions should answer:

    • Does the tour suit my technical ability and conditioning as well as the abilities of my companions?
    • How long do I need for the tour, considering the length and altitude?
    • How do you get to the starting point and how can I get back? (Car, cable car, bus, ...)

Wonderful panorama in the Zillertal Alps

For example, I chose the tour “Au Sundergrund” (Mitterjoch). It takes a total walking time of five hours, in which 1,390 vertical metres and 12.1 kilometres are covered. This is exactly the right fit for me in terms of conditioning.
The starting point is located 15.3 kilometres from Mayrhofen. By car, I can be at the Alpengasthof In der Au in about 23 minutes: I can park there.
TIP: The routes for mountaineering in the Zillertal are marked with colours: blue is easy, red is medium and black is difficult. These colours can also be found on the yellow signposts along the routes.

  • Study key points

Once you have chosen the desired route for hiking in the Zillertal, you can go into detail. So as not to be surprised by unexpected surprises that could spoil the fun of hiking, it is important that you locate and study the key points of the tour. You should answer the following questions to do this:

    • What does the terrain look like along the tour?
    • How steep is it?
    • What conditions await me along the tour? (Especially important if you choose an alpine tour)
    • Where are the difficult passages and how can I tackle them?
    • What must the weather conditions be like to do the tour? Snow in spring is not uncommon.

With my chosen route the rise in altitude is even until about half way up the slope and then becomes steeper before arriving on a flat plateau. I can see that in the height profile of the interactive map.

So the difficult passages will only happen after a long walk. The description indicates steep grades and a block signal, which I have to pay attention to. In terms of weather conditions, I would not take any risks when hiking or climbing in the Zillertal, because the conditions must definitely be right to do a five-hour tour.

  • Refreshments and meals

You have to ensure you have sufficient food and drink in your backpack during hikes. On a longer tour, of course, it is also important to take care of yourself. You should plan stops in the pastures along the route or you take yourown snacks while hiking.

    The ideal hiking food includes:

    • High-quality carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread with cheese or lean meat, salads made from wholemeal pasta combined with meat or fish, boiled eggs, raw food or homemade cake.
    • Small snacks such as nuts, chopped fruit and vegetables or granola bars, dried fruit
    • Sufficient liquid such as water or carbonated apple juice.

Leave greasy or very sugary foods behind - they make your body feel sluggish.
The planned tour passes by numerous alpine pastures such as the Rachhüttenalm and the Kainzenhüttenalm. It is definitely worth planning a stop on the way back.

TIP: You should always keep emergency rations such as cereal bars and water in your backpack.

  • Weather check

Just a few days before the planned hike, you should check the weather. For the weather in Mayrhofen you will find current information on the website as well as on the mobile app. The Website of ZAMG is especially recommended. You will find special information about the mountain weather there.

Be sure to pack climbing gear for alpine tours.

  • Equipment and checklist

In the mountains, you will encounter gravel and gravel roads, alpine and forest paths as well walkways. In addition, the weather can change very quickly. Having the right equipment is really important for hiking the Zillertal. Walking shoes should be ankle-high and sturdy. To avoid blisters, the shoes should be broken in before a longer tour. The choice of the right socks is also important.
I recommend layering clothing. Bring several layers that you can wear and remove depending on the weather or your body temperature.

Storm the summit with the right equipment

    • Digicam or camera
    • Lighter or match
    • Fleece jacket or pullover
    • Money
    • Cellphone or radio
    • Snack and drinks
    • Hiking map
    • Trash bag
    • Rain protection
    • Sunglasses
    • Sunscreen
    • Handkerchiefs
    • Bandage (plaster)
    • Walking stick
